1/18 Other Voices: "Choosing Sides..." Arthur Silber

digest intro: OTHER VOICES
Arthur Silber fearlessly rips the mask off US injustice and hypocrisy. Silber doesn't claim to be a revolutionary. As 'recovering' left liberal ('recovering' since while righteously denouncing the US political system & its major electoral arms, shredding 'hopeful' liberal illusions its politicians could make systemic changes, he also suggests that libertarian Ron Paul might, if allowed). A passionate, instructive radical libertarian, Silber is a 'fa real' ally. A few brief edited excerpts from his "Once Upon a Time: Power of Narrative" blogspot:

The Nightmare Made Real: Torture, Murder and Endless Horror Institutionalized and Normalized -- by Democrats
5/3/08 http://powerofnarrative.blogspot.com/2008/05/nightmare-made-real-torture...
I didn't want to write this post. It gives me no pleasure finally to have to make certain judgments, and to recognize it is almost impossible there will ever be any reason to revise or amend them. I have been very harsh in my evaluation of the Democrats and those who ceaselessly work for Democratic electoral victory...Nonetheless, I still had clung to an exceedingly slim thread of hope that at least a few of the Democrats and/or their supporters would act on behalf of the sanctity of human life, of civilization, of the most basic sense of decency. That hope is now gone, probably forever.
You desperately need to understand this: the next President of the United States, no matter who it is, will enter office knowing he or she can systematically and regularly authorize torture, order mass murder, direct the United States military to engage in one campaign of criminal conquest and genocide after another, oversee uncountable acts of inhumanity and barbarity -- and never be challenged or called to account in any manner whatsoever... this will be where the next President starts. And for this monstrous, unforgivable fact, you can thank the Democrats and those who whore themselves for the Democrats' success in our disgustingly meaningless elections....

Choosing Sides (I): "Why America May Go to Hell," and Feeling Young Again

I am profoundly in Jeremiah Wright's debt. He has reinvigorated my spirit, strengthened certain dwindling resources of mine, and made me feel young again.
It is often noted that many people become more conservative as they age. The opposite is true in my case. Over the last three or four years in particular, I have become more and more radical. I once described my political beliefs as libertarian in nature ... from the time I began blogging in September 2002... I recognized the corporatist-authoritarian state at home and an aggressively and violently interventionist foreign policy are inextricably linked, that they are but the two faces of the same coin. But as my political-cultural critique has hopefully deepened, my political views altered. I now describe myself as a leftist-anarchist...

Choosing Sides (II): Killing Truth and Hope -- The Fatal Illusion of Opposition

Toward the beginning of "The Nightmare Made Real ," I wrote:

It may have taken the Bush administration two terms to bring us to the point where such evils are committed and even boasted about in broad daylight, while almost no one even notices -- but this will be where the next President starts.

See the earlier post for a fuller argument on this subject .
A crucially related issue connects to the earlier post, and deserves discussion separately: there is nothing so dangerous as the illusion of opposition, when in fact no such opposition exists... " ...They both stand for endless war and global interventionism... for authoritarianism on the domestic front" (http://www.chris-floyd.com/content/view/1248/) ...
You may wish to engage in magical thinking -- as liberals and progressives like to do when they repeat with straight faces that Barack Obama's goal is "changing the very nature of politics " -- but deluding yourself will not alter the nature or direction of our political system....
I have documented the inexorable development of the U.S. political system over more than a century, toward a corporatist-authoritarian state domestically with a militantly, violently interventionist foreign policy. This system... is reflected economically and politically through inordinately complex interconnections between nominally private business enterprise and government... on every level: city, county, state and federal... and through intentionally incomprehensible regulations...it is reflected in a strangling, exceedingly narrow range of "acceptable" thought .

Ordinary Evil (I): Just Admit that You're Voting for Hitler, Okay?

...Santorum is a "crazy" Republican nutjob, right? He's not the one who ordered the murder of al-Awlaki. You know who did: the "enlightened," "nuanced," Nobel Peace Prize-winning Democrat in the White House. Many liberals and progressives claim to be sickened and terrified by the prospect that some "crazy" Republican might be the next president -- and forbid themselves to acknowledge it is a Democratic president who has provided the moral sanction and "justification" for what could, in principle, become a genocidal, worldwide campaign of murder. But at least he's not crazy! I'm reminded of a brief passage I wrote in an almost a throwaway post a year and a half ago :
Oh, President Obama! What a visionary! What a leader! Such momentous change from the dark days of evil, crazy Bush!
I always especially enjoy that argument from liberals and progressives. "Oh, Democrats might be doing most of the same things... and some of the things Obama's doing are even worse ... but Republicans are crazy!" ...Obama and the Democrats do this and they're sane. They know exactly what they're doing, why, and even what the effects will be. This, we are assured, is a notable improvement, for which we should be properly grateful....
Obama and his administration claim the "right" to murder anyone in the world, wherever, for whatever reason they choose -- or for no reason at all...recognize no limit to people they can murder in this manner... claim nothing at all may impede the exercise of this "right." This is the game entire...

Those Clever, Dastardly Iranians! Bamboozling Us with Facts ... and Even (gasp!) Photographs!

...It is obvious to anyone, unless you hate America to the marrow of your bones and fervently hope that all of the United States goes up in a mushroom cloud in the immediate future, that the defense minister would only be there if Iran is going to have nuclear weapons tomorrow. And tomorrow -- maybe later today, you can never be sure with such deeply malevolent people -- WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!...
