Obama names GE’s Immelt to head new jobs panel

President Barack Obama named General Electric’s CEO Jeffrey Immelt as the chair of the White House’s new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, restructuring his economic team to place an emphasis on job creation. for a decade Immelt has run GE, a diversified technology, media and financial services company. (MSNBC.com is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal, owned by GE) ...Obama recently named JPMorgan Chase executive William Daley to be his chief of staff...

GE's CEO Jeff Immelt joined Barack Obama, Mohammed El-Erian, Vikram Pandit , Barack Obama and others in supporting Occupy Wall Street.
"Occupy Wall Street" protesters complain that billions the U.S. government spent during the recession to prop up financial companies, including GE, allowed banks to earn large profits without benefiting average Americans. OWS complains the billions the U.S. spent during the recession to prop up financial companies, including GE, allowed banks to earn large profits without benefiting average Americans. Immelt said "Unemployment is 9.1 percent. Underemployment is much higher, particularly among young people that don't have a college degree. It is natural to assume people are angry, and I think we have to be empathetic and understand that people are not feeling great. The discrepancy between CEO pay and the rest of American is certainly one of the problems today in terms of why people feel the system is unfair." ... Immelt received compensation worth $21.4 million last year, including a $4 million bonus....
GE expects to generate more than 60 % of its revenue outside the US this year. Analysts, on average, expect it to record revenue of $148.13 billion. Immelt is confident that U.S. business can compete with rivals China and Russia in emerging markets...and said GE is investing in resource-rich African countries including Mozambique, Angola, Nigeria and South Africa....
Last week, the White House advisory panel Immelt heads submitted a report to the Obama administration saying that attracting more foreign capital, being more aggressive in energy policy, and investing in infrastructure could help create jobs in an economy struggling with high unemployment.

White House Approved Departure of Saudis After Sept. 11
WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 — Top White House officials personally approved the evacuation of dozens of influential Saudis, including relatives of Osama bin Laden, from the US in the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks when public flights were still grounded, said former White House adviser Richard Clarke, who ran the White House crisis team after the attacks, has since left the Bush administration, but said he agreed to the extraordinary plan because the FBI assured him the departing Saudis were not linked to terrorism... providing the first acknowledgment that the White House had direct involvement in the plan and senior administration officials personally signed off on it. Mr. Clarke made his remarks about the plan first in a Vanity Fair article due out Thursday, and expanded on them today in an interview and in Congressional testimony. The White House said it had no comment on Mr. Clarke's statements... The article depicts an elaborate but hurried evacuation carried out within a week of the hijackings in which private planes picked up Saudis from 10 cities. Some aviation and bureau officials said they were upset by the operation because the government had not lifted flight restrictions for the general public, but said they lacked the power to stop the evacuation.

The world according to derivatives: where industry, military and government converge
By Geraldine Perry, 2/2/09 www.onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_4307.shtml
...Bear Stearns, J.P. Morgan, Carlyle Capitol, the Carlyle Group and a very long list of other rarefied corporations are (or were, as the case may be) all heavily involved in derivatives instruments...where success brought more investors, including the international financier George Soros and the Saudi Bin Ladin family...
The Carlyle Group ... which claims to be the largest private equity firm in the world...has what can only be described as a controversial history with trails leading to 9-11, the current war on terror, the first Gulf War, Afghanistan and elsewhere... also extensive “counter party links” to Enron, Arthur Andersen, Global Crossing, the Saudi Royal Family Bin Ladens. Its main business is buying and selling large corporations. Described as a powerful bank and leading defense contractor, the Carlyle Group is a key player in the privatization of public resources in the U.S....as an October 31, 2001 Guardian UK article tells it . . .“This is exactly the way Carlyle likes it. For 14 years, with almost no publicity, the company has been signing up an impressive list of former politicians -- including the first President Bush and his secretary of state, James Baker; John Major; one-time World Bank treasurer Afsaneh Masheyekhi and south-east Asian power brokers ... Among corporations Carlyle owns are defence companies which make equipment, vehicles and munitions for the US military...When Carlucci arrived there in 1989, he brought with him a phalanx of former subordinates from the CIA and the Pentagon... In a decade and a half, the firm has been able to realise a 34% rate of return on its investments...The first President Bush is understood to have visited the Bin Ladins in Saudi Arabia twice on the firm’s behalf...
